Saturday Night Live is a late-night sketch comedy/variety show that has been on American TV for over 40 years. This show is known for its nods to popular culture and anything that is relevant in the news or politics. Each episode there are celebrity guest hosts featuring celebrity guests within various sketches. I personally don’t find American humour appealing a lot of the time, I feel it lacks the easygoing Witt that British people have. I’m hoping that finding out more about scripted sketch comedy differentiates from a full blown ongoing show/series. Also, I want to see if there is a way to have a sketch within a documentary format.

This sketch is obviously reflecting the first 2016 presidential debate. They immediately mock how the mediator referred to Hilary Clinton as “Secretary Clinton” which a lot of people found degrading. They also made fun of how she would stumble on words often, Trump consistently combating any claims against him as wrong without any context. This kind of humour focuses more on the what was said rather than making fun of the entire situation like a lot of comedy I’ve seen. I also enjoyed the impressions that actor Alec Baldwin and comedian Kate Mckinnon did. That really helped drive the comedy along. It may just be a matter of taste for me.

However there is one skit I found very amusing. It was a skit where America is under an alien invasion and the army goes to president Trump seeking advice. Trump doesn’t take the situation seriously till New York city was attacked and his hotel destroyed, this pokes fun at how he only seems to care about things when it affects him personally. The most outrageous thing what was said was when he claimed that there have been aliens living within the country for many years then proceeding to single out two black women. This is obviously a call to trumps stance on Mexicans and his distaste of the black community. When he is questioned on where he got this information from. He then goes on to say Infowars which is known as a Very Conservative conspiracy theory website/Radioshow run by Alex Jones. This show is seen as a joke to most people. This is context, I feel if someone didn’t know the context they would probably be quite lost however for someone like me who is aware I found that quite amusing.

In conclusion, this sketch comedy show that has stood the test of time and is still enjoyed by Americans to this day. Its commentary is very effective however it does require prior knowledge that some may not know. It captures the absurdity that a lot of people don’t really point out in their day to day lives. nonetheless, it is definitely a great way to spend a Saturday night.
