Middlesex – 25th Nov

On 25/11/17 I went to an open day for Middlesex University, I had high hopes for this open day as it is my No.1 university option. When I arrived I was given a schedule of all the subject talks that would be taking place throughout the day and was given an overall consultation of the campus and environment. I first went to the talk for the film BA course where we were shown various works from past students and a brief on the course structure throughout the three years. It was really helpful to have a clear breakdown of what exactly we’d be doing specifically in the first year. Shortly after the talk had ended I made my way to the TV studio to attend the TV production BA talk. I have been quite conflicted about doing a film BA or a TV BA as they’re both pathways I want to go through so I’ll be attending talks for both. In this talk, we had a course breakdown and we were shown some of the programmes that have been made by past students, what I liked most was how fast-paced the course looked. A current student talked to us about the different components such as using the studios, the in-depth research and the use of various equipment. TV is something I’ve always wanted to dip my toes into as recently I’ve started watching quite a lot of TV and have found the production process for TV is quite engaging with a lot of creative freedom in the cases I’ve seen. I think I’ll be sitting on whether or not I’d want to do Film or TV but either way, I really am pleased with facilities at this university, I didn’t get to speak to anyone about specific aids I may need however if I do get an interview I’ll definitely be asking questions about facilities for someone who may need assistance.

Westminster – 6th December

On 06/12/17 I attended the University of Westminster open day at their harrow campus which focuses on Media, Art and Design. From my own research, I found out that their Film BA course would be the most suitable for the direction I want to take in the industry. When I arrived at the University I went to speak representatives for the Film BA also the Television BA. I have been very conflicted on whether or not Film is the pathway for me or if I should try out Television which I’m not as familiar with. The representative for the film course went through all my concerns, the entry requirements which where ABB which is about 128 UCAS points which would be a high Merit or a Distinction. My predicted grade is estimated at a Merit level so I believe that I just about fit the entry requirements, I may have to work extra hard to ensure that I get a distinction. I attended a talk on the Film BA course presented by the course leader, he gave a course breakdown. Film theory is an integral part of the course and is about 50% of the overall course. They focus a lot on specialised fields

in film production so we could be certain by the end of the course of what exactly we’d want to do in the industry. The facilities were also quite appealing, they had both digital and 16mm editing suites, an extensive library and a sound mixing room. After the tour, we were taken to a small theatre to see some short films made by students within the past couple of years. Half were documentaries while the other half was drama based. Finally, there was a Q&A with 3rd-year students and the tutors. It was very informative as they talked about the experience they’ve gotten throughout their time at Westminster. Overall I found that Westminster is an exceptional university choice, this university will remain as my insurance choice.
